The DSC Cruiser fleet consists of roughly 40 yachts of various makes and sizes however they tend to range from 17ft up to 32ft in length and have usually bilge keels or lifting keels which are kept on swing moorings between April and September, which are overlooked by the club house.
Our main sailing area is in the Dee estuary which is a tidal river and will give you the opportunity for up to four hours of sailing on a single tide (Mostyn Dock: HW -2 until HW +2) which is a good amount of time for a ‘half day’ sail staying within the Dee estuary.
If you want to go further afield then you will have access to some fantastic local areas such as Hilbre Island, Hoyle Sandbank, Mostyn Fun ship, Fflint, Talacre or Rhyl harbour which are all within distance on a two tides sail. At times, we will sail as far as Anglesey, Isle of Man or Preston however these locations take considerably more time to sail to.
Out of season, between October and March, any boats bigger than 26ft are usually kept at local marinas due to our boat lifts (‘Dunkin’) capability and our space limitations ashore. Boats that we are able to accommodate are kept on their owners’ trailers and stored in our yard.
Our cruiser community are very friendly and welcoming and are more than happy to give advice, share experiences and offer assistance such as stepping masts and launching/recovering your boat when the time comes. When we are not at the club, we are still active through a dedicated WhatsApp group.
As a member there is opportunity to learn from willing sailors to improve your sailing skills and this can be done if you own a boat or not! Often our cruiser members are looking for crew to help them when they go for a sail. Occasionally we run RYA training courses to members to improve their knowledge/skills or to learn something new entirely.
